Study task 2: 25 EXAMPLES OF CATEGORISED WORK

Following on from our PPP sessions we were asked to identify as a year group the common reasons why people had selected certain pieces of work that sparked there creative interests, we identified thirteen different common reasons why people had selected certain pieces of work, the reasons were:

  • Creative use of Type
  • Visual Quality
  • Tone of Voice
  • Attention to detail
  • Simplicity of Design
  • Meaning or Message
  • Audience engagement / interaction
  • Style or aesthetic quality
  • Use of Media & Method of Production
  • Relationship between Form & Format
  • Interest in the content.
  • Use / Choice of language
  • Structure & Layout
After identifying these we were asked to selected five from the list which we felt were worthy of further research and which seemed to be evident within our initial selection, the five categories which I thought were worthy to chose and evident within my initial selection consisted of:

1) ATTENTION TO DETAIL

2) SIMPLICITY OF DESIGN

3) INTEREST IN CONTENT

4) STRUCTURE AND LAYOUT

5) MEANING OR MESSAGE

From this list we were further tasked to research and collate five examples of work for each category we had selected have selected and explain the reasons behind selecting these these pieces of work.

1) ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Dan Mountford http://www.danmountford.bigcartel.com/product/valeria

I have chosen this piece by Dan Mountford as my first example for 'Attention of Detail' as I feel that the piece is extensively intricate in its crafting. The use of the silhouette which contains numerous double exposure frames has a sense of culture, society and futurism to it. The use of greyscale colours to adds to this sense of mystery and however also contrasts the stale cream background. I feel that this piece has been crafted using traditional film photography along with digital processes to create a well-crafted intricate piece.

As you can see this piece has been hand drawn/ hand crafted, the horizontal lines which flow across the  width of the circular foundation of the piece have a sense of precision and clarity to them. The type which has been used within the piece seems fairly aged, the use of a heavy stroke in certain areas to show a three-dimensional aspect to the type creates a sense of heaviness and density to the piece. I feel that the use of compact horizontal lines and the use of minimal materials has created a detailed piece.

 Carne Griffiths: http://www.behance.net/gallery/Fragment-Postcard-Pack/5335133

This piece which is part of a series of fashion/fine arts postcards have been hand drawn/ hand illustrated by using water colour and pencil materials. I have chosen this to be apart of one of my five 'Attention to detail examples' as I feel that the piece uses the beauty of line and marks to represent the blissfulness of the figurative face that lyes within the foundation of the piece. The use of intersecting water colour marks produces a element of fluidity and a reflection of soul to the piece.

Stranger & stranger are a company that design, market, sell and produce packing for alcoholic beverages such as wines and beers. The reason I have chosen this particular piece for the category 'Attention of detail' is because I feel that the packaging has been intricately designed in comparison to the average alcoholic beverage bottle that you would find in a supermarket. The actual packaging itself has been designed to portray a sense of class and smoothness of fine wine.

As you can see from this piece at face value it seems rather simplistic in its design and construction. However if you look closely at the piece there is a detail within the pencil stroke of the piece. The artists has clearly refined each stroke with a certain harshness when placing the pencil to the paper. Particular areas of the piece are highlighted through the pencil stroke. I feel this piece has a sense of simplicity to it at face value however if looked at carefully there is a sense of intricacy in its construction and crafting.

2) SIMPLICITY OF DESIGN

http://costaskay.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/the-black-keys-brothers-album-cover.jpg

Besides being one of my most idolised bands 'The Black Keys' I feel that this piece of design is organic in its form however also represents the a slice of each member of the bands personality. As you can see the name of the album is "Brothers'', the type which has been used for the cover represents the identity of the band as this is the type that is consistently used for merchandise and also branding. I feel that the contrasting colours which have been used create clarity to the piece. It is simplistic in its format and layout yet the audience can still respond positively to the piece.

Henrik Ellersgaard http://www.behance.net/gallery/DRONE-SANS/5347769

This typeface names "Drone Sans' by" by Henrik Ellergaard is simplistic yet quirk and contemporary, the adjusting of the kern and lead within the piece makes some of the characters seem more playful and contemporary. The use of a simplistic contrasting black background with crystal clear white text maintains the formality of the piece. The central aligned of the type also helps the audience to establish the focal point and maintains a visual balance to the human eye.

http://origin.myfonts.com/s/aw/original/32/0/16825.jpg

Although this piece 'Quick fast hurry. nevermind relax' seems fairly busy in terms of the way it has been formatted and the positioning of the certain elements which structure the layout, the actual content of the piece is fairly simplistic in its design and production. The piece has been created through the carving of the wooden background, as you can see the piece is simplistic in its form through development, process and final outcome.

Balazs Szabo: http://www.behance.net/gallery/PALICIUC-law-office/5214251

This piece of design is a branding piece created as a identity logo for a Romanian law firm. I have chosen this piece of work to go in this category as I feel that it is simplistic in its form and structure. The layout of the piece is visually balanced as the logo has been centrally aligned, this creates a formality to the logo, reflecting the brand/ law firm that the logo is representing. The logo design itself (the umbrella) gives a connotation of being shielded and protected from bad weather.

Firstly I chose this piece of design because it is my favourite shape. The basis of the design uses triangles, the shape is versatile in many aspects it can be used in a religious context, cultural context and social context. In this context it has been used to brand a company.

3) INTEREST IN CONTENT

The first piece I have chosen as apart of the category 'Interest in content' is the 'Le tour de France' piece by Javier Fuentes show above. I feel that the piece radiates an infusion of energy and enthusiasm, this feeling is stimulated through the use of fluorescent yet passionate use of colour. The intersection of these colours through the middle sector of the piece highlights certain areas of the skyline of France, outlining certain landmarks such as The Eiffel tower.

I very much like the way that this piece uses a range of soft medium to produce the content of the piece. I think that the mark-making on this piece is inspiring, although graphic design is usually heavily vector based I feel that this piece outlines the beauty of handcrafted illustration within graphic design. I feel that this piece represents the artists disipline in mark-making and outlines that it is an important skill to have when hand crafting pieces of work.

I have chosen this piece by David Foldvari firstly because I feel that the content of his work is reflective of controversial issues and represents culture and society well, such as the piece shown above represents the poor monetary wealth of a young school boy in the 1950's, as you can see Foldvari has decayed and eroded the shoes/boys boots using techniques with his biro pen.

www.tumblr.com

As you can see this piece has been uploaded to tumblr as a quick rough phrase which has been scribbled onto a blank sheet of white paper. Although it hasn't been carefully crafted or produced using a range of materials or highly vector based I personally feel it deserves recognition. The quote/phrase has a passionate foundation/centre although the face value of the piece seems crude in its choice of wording, the piece is straight to the point and filled with emotion from a angered perspective.

I think this fits well under the 'Interest in Content' category as I feel that the content of the piece/ the wording of the piece is emotive and philosophical to some extent. The piece communicates a valuable lesson about life, it communicates the importance of progressing as a person or designer or just progressing in life positively by using a quirky comparison/analogy.

4) STRUCTURE & LAYOUT

Ana Gomez:  http://www.behance.net/gallery/Unire-i-Punti-Graphic-Package/4916769

As you can see this piece by Ana Gomez has been created as a packaging piece for the front of a book cover design. I particularly like the structure of this piece as we can clearly see that the designer is brave and confident in there practice as they are not fearful of leaving spacing (such as the spacing left on the right half of the design. Although the typography is not bold and formal like typefaces such as Helvetica or Arial I feel that it has still been constructed with accuracy and precision.

Neville Brody: https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKe3WYYLnuoc7gcvJCWmIIKzsXDvfp3tMdAHYarOzuoXZMGz-1u1k77MIerZIicXZ4Pd0yWsWePYISFW9sJTpCCIBvo-yGPcdBGY_Flvw9x92ymeq-a_Ili8uZFDQ1HVxkt4f5WMD6MwAY/s1600/023_NevilleBrodyWork.jpg

I think it was important to include Neville Brody's editorial work within my blog, Neville Brody is one of the most idolised typographers and brand strategist within industry, he has designed editorial articles for large editorial companies such as "The Face'' magazine, "Eye'' magazine throughout his years of designing after graduating from the London College of Printing, not only does his work well-structured and composed he also incorporates traditional print processes into his work.

Shepard Fairey:  http://senseslost.com/third-rail-content/uploads/the-black-keys-shepard-fairey-design.jpg

As you can see not only are "The Black Keys'' one of my favourite bands, I also find there promotional packaging/merchandise incredibly inspirational. This particular promotional poster was created by the recently renown Shepard Fairey American graphic designer and illustrator, well-known for creating the brand 'Obey' from his skater-style and more obviously the series of Obama posters he produced during the elections. I feel this piece is relevant for the category 'Structure and Layout' as I feel it is proves that a piece of design can be well-structured although the content may be busy and dense. As you can see Shepard Fairey has maintained a visual balance through this poster by making the grid symmetrical in its content.

As you can see from this piece the original template shown on the left hand side has a clear structure and layout, the type which has been used has been centrally aligned in order to maintain a visual balance to such between the powdered layer finish.

FAT magazine is a international magazine produced in Denmark, this particular studio has designed a fair-few pages typographic pages for the magazines. As you can this floral letterform which they have produced is incredibly detailed inside the character. I think that this piece works well as a piece of editorial design as it conforms with the formality of editorial design in terms of the careful alignment and positioning however it maintains the audiences interest through the detailed crafting of the inner-character.

5) MEANING/MESSAGE

Shepard Fairey: http://obeygiant.com/images/2008/10/obama.jpg

One of the worlds most recognised design pieces, not only being one of the most recognised it has also been one of the worlds most influential pieces of graphic design in a political context. The series of Obama posters with one word captions on the bottom portray his values and policy's as a black leader, the use of the traditional American colour scheme palette (red, blue and white) has allowed for the political side of the design to be reflective of the culture/region of representation along with being an effective combination of primary colours.

"A quote from John F. Kennedy, originally meant to be an uplifting quote".

I like the way this designer has used content which is historic, and brought it into a contemporary piece of design. Although some may argue that the quote is 'uplifting with a glimmer of hope' or others may argue that 'it takes on a darker meaning when linked ton bad ideas' I feel that the actual print design of the piece has been constructed well. the type has been positioned in a manner that represents the bottom of the lightbulb whilst the different textures within the light bulb simmer out as the fade decays into the greyness of the solid background.

Camilo Rojas:  http://www.behance.net/gallery/The-street-of-life/1086165

"This is an ongoing self-initiated exploration, exposing my sentiments and ideas to the public arena by
handwriting messages on found spiritless pieces of wood or carton, attributing new meanings to them.

Primarily, the objective is that the intention speaks louder than the design, to the point where design is not even needed, to put a smile on our faces with a daily dose of positivity and reality as you cross the road.
They are meant to inspire, motivate, and question our internal ideas. "

Although this book design doesn't have a 'deep' meaning or depth, it outlines that graphic design is a blank canvas for prospering designers. Not only do I think that the design of the cover has an intriguing level of clarity, I also think that the content of the book has depth into how to be a practitioner of graphic design. The use of colour (light and dark grey) for the type highlights the inventive way that the designers have composed the typography.

I think that the message/meaning of poverty and religion has been executed well in this piece. The use of this 'kabel' font which has been produced through the infusion of electricity outlines that as a westernised society electricity is taken for granted as a daily necessity, however for a less fortunate being such as the person shown in this photograph electricity would be a luxury. Using this contrast to juxtapose the two elements makes the phrase 'Please God make tomorrow better' seem like a more effective and emotive quote.
