Following up ‘Why am I here’ in graphic
design we were asked to furthermore identify 10 examples of work we found that
sparked our creative interests. After blogging these examples we had to give an
explanation to our blog groups of why we had chosen the particular
pieces/photos. In response to listening to each other we wrote down the
following reasons to summaries each other’s choice:

Finds typography and shapes interesting
a sense of mathematics in design work is inspirational (Jason Miguel Mendez).
·
Handcraft typography intricate and
interesting to produce.
·
Identity/branding influences an
audience a great deal, finds the power of colour and shape engaging.
·
Finds traditional black and white
photography emotive.
·
Likes to work with shapes and constructing
things with unusual materials such as food.
·
Piece is quirky and heavily
illustrative.
·
Likes the simplistic approach to the
piece and use of solid block colours.
·
Traditional print processes have been
used along with digital adjustments.
·
There is a focus on typography with an
element of playfulness.
·
Use of mix-media in one of the pieces.
·
Use of 3D cartoon illustrations and
mix-media materials.
·
Interest in print work and gig posters,
personal/musical interest along with design interest aspect.
·
Tom Hanks- Childhood love for films,
found his movies an inspiration since a young age.
·
Travelling – Finds contour lines that
run through map creatively infusing in some aspect.
·
Bright colours – Film photography – William
Eggelston
·
Grand Design – Dream to build a house –
Piece is reflective of this dream.
·
Bold colours and repeat patterns.
·
Reading books/ looking at books.
·
Live music inspirational, the atmosphere
and feeling of being in a crowd of people and listening to a organic piece of
music live.
·
Guggenheim (Spain) – Like architecture.
·
Gaudi – Natural form and fluidity of
work
·
Inspired by fluidity (Marian Bantje)
·
Indoor gardens – Like to bring external
into the internal and vise-versa.
·
Blind Embossing – Subtle texture created
by emboss I comparison to coloured emboss pieces.
·
Wedding invited – Like the personal
design aspect of them, they can say a lot about the characteristics of a couple
(people).
·
Mixture of type and image- simplistic
in format yet interesting.
·
Type and use of colour, bold and
fluidity, the structure of the type and use of colour reflect the phrase and
use of wording.
·
Digital and numerical piece of type.
·
Piece is crisp and clean-cut; contrast in
black and white creates clarity.
·
Logo design – creating identity and
brand awareness.
·
Peter Blake- Likes aged/dated kind of
work.
·
Lewis Carol – rat’s tails and composition
of typography on the piece.
·
Likes the retro approach, using
outdoors (walls) as a canvas.
·
Typography – like the surface of the
printed finish.
·
Illustration – Likes the retro meeting
the illustration use of colour.
As we can see we collated a wide range
of reasons for why each other had selected particular pieces of work. If we
look down the list in some cases we can see a common reason for selection. From
this point we decided to hand pick these common examples and as a year group we
identified them as:
- Creative use of Type
- Visual Quality
- Tone of Voice
- Attention to detail
- Simplicity of Design
- Meani or Message
- Audience engagement / interaction
- Style or aesthetic quality
- Use of Media & Method of Production
- Relationship betwen Form & Format
- Interest in the content.
- Use / Choice of language
- Structure & Layout
