study task 1: 10 EXAMPLES OF CREATIVE INTERESTS

David Foldvari
Another field within design that I have a creative interest in is illustration; David Foldvari is an illustrator that I have found rather inspirational throughout my creative experiences so far. The content of his work depicts subject areas that controversial however he takes a non-bias and neutral approach to his work without being discriminative.

Lana Del Rey Album cover
Album covers are usually pieces of design that I tend not to be creatively interested in, however on this occasion I feel that this particular album cover has infused my creative cells as it has been created with such clarity and precision. The foundation of the piece being the background image, which has been purposely adjusted out-of-focus to put prominence on the figure in the center and also the use of typography which sits upon the blue-sky background colour of the image. A clear grid system has been put in place to ensure the crisp clarity is conveyed to the audience/user of the product.

Paris
Another field within design that captures my creative interests is film photography; out of my obsessive collection of eleven film cameras one of my most loved cameras is the Diana Mini F+ by Lomography. The 36mm camera enables you to create multiple exposure shots, such as the one shown here of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, with this particular image a colour filter has been placed on the flash to leave the developed image with a coat red/orange finish.

Stefan Sagmeister
Another area of my creative interests lye’s within typography, Stefan Sagmeister is a typographer who I upmost look up to when carrying out contextual analysis. As you can see these pieces are fairly hands on in terms of the materials used to create them. The use of environment is one of the prominent factors within this series of work; the idea of taking a concept and broadening the size of the canvas by working on a large scale clearly shows the passion that he has for communicating the message.

Vintage Graphics No. 2
The use of colour in this illustration/ design is the main reason I have chosen this piece created by this studio/company, they seem to compliment each other well as well as sitting comfortably on a pale background. I also think that the typography on this piece has been crafted well to create a silhouette on the main body of the vehicle, the adjusting of the kern and leading has added a nature of busyness and focal point.

Alan Kitching
Alan Kitching is a designer that utilizes traditional print methods/processes to create typography for editorials articles. The reason I feel he is an inspirational designer is due to the fact that he is able to tailor his work in a contemporary manner using simple printing methods, the composition of the type that he uses brings the headline of editorial articles onto a new level as he challenges the usual grid system approach that institutions usually go for. There is a sense of confidence in the way he composes his work along with a sense of pride in simplicity and colour.

Oh comely magazine
This is the latest issue of the magazine ‘oh comely’; the magazine is filled with ‘creative talk’, stories and inspirational images, illustrations and photography. I have chosen this as one of my ten examples as I feel that it illustrates that not all editorial magazines have to follow strict, formal, codes and vector conventions to be successful and as one would say a ‘professional looking magazine’. The soft colours used on the front of the editorial convey the light hearted-ness and warmth of the content of the magazine.

Florence and the machine
Along with being one of the most inspirational artists and an amazing lyricist this photograph captures the natural beauty of Florence Walch. The black and white washout photo adds to this sense of glamour and class, which is being depicted to the audience.

‘I loved you at your darkest’ http://www.tumblr.com/reblog/32421025376/mDeLq91G

Although this piece is fairly simplistic I feel that there is more to the piece than what we see at face value. There is a sense of darkness and lust; a sense of loneliness and loyalty, the piece is filled with emotion however at face value there is coldness in the aesthetics. The type that has been used is structured and broad in its stance giving a sense of confidence in what is being shown.

Photography is a large part of graphic design, this piece by Devid clearly demonstrates the beauty of black and white photography in conjunction with the beauty of digital software that has been used to manipulate and outline the focal area of the piece. The designer is clearly not afraid of leaving spacing around and above the image; there is a sense of confidence to this particular piece and to the series that this piece belongs too.
